Book Baskets

Book Baskets was started in 1995 by Mildred Abraham who wanted to create a way to get lightly used books, like the ones her grandchildren owned but would not keep forever, into the hands of children who had few or no books of their own.

She assembled an advisory board and began collecting books through a few area schools. Things grew from there and today Book Baskets is collecting books from 24 schools and giving out more than 23,000 books a year.

Book Baskets emphasizes book ownership by placing a bookplate in each of our books and by requesting that the children who choose the books put their names in them.

We distribute books to a growing number of social service agencies, schools, and education programs. We are always interested in expanding our program to new Charlottesville and Albemarle County organizations.
